At the beginning of August, about 8 employees from Google tweeted about a manifesto which has been written by a senior software engineer. The manifesto circulated inside the company through a mailing list and contained a demand for the company to replace its diversity initiative with ideological diversity.
Although the document hasn’t been seen by the public, employees tweeted some descriptions of the content and an anonymous employee described it into an interview. A day after the tweets, a website published the entire manifesto.
The personal opinion of the software engineer had the title: “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber” and contained different issues such as women are scarce in the tech field not because they’re discriminated at work, but because they are psychologically different than men. He also went on about the fact that Google shouldn’t offer any programs to gender or racial minorities.
Some employees agreed with the manifesto, while some didn’t. A former anonymous employee stated that working at Google felt like being between some employees that thought diversity lowered the bar.
The author also argued that employees that had a conservative political view are discriminated at Google and focus too much on having an open culture. His document concluded that racial and gender diversity isn’t as important as making the conservatives feel better at work and to able to express their opinions.
The next day, after almost all the employees from Google accessed the document, Danielle Brown, Google’s Vice President of Diversity, Integrity & Governance gave the Google employees a statement as a response to the manifesto.
She stated that diversity and inclusion are fundamental and will be cultivated no matter what, this being the way to success. Danielle Brown said that the document’s point of view on gender assumptions is not going to be promoted or encouraged. She added that fostering a diversity in culture or political views lets people share their opinions and not otherwise.
