The year 2016 has to be one of the biggest years for the world of technology. The Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things are all set to change the markets, and many new and existing firms are jumping ship to the new age technology rather quickly.

Microsoft too, has been one such name which has declared their ventures into the world of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, as the company gears up with their gen-next device, the Microsoft Hololens.

Microsoft Hololens has been one of the most awaited names in the world of technology, and Microsoft has finally thrown off all the curtains as the pre-orders for the Hololens have finally been made official by the company.

While other companies have been coming out with commercial VR devices, such as the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift, Microsoft’s device is quite different. It is neither a gaming device nor a VR device. It is an augmented reality headset which is not consumer-ready as of now. The company has released the Microsoft Hololens as a pre-order version for the developers.

The device has been priced in at a massive $3000, but the price comes in as no surprise as the price was already revealed by the company back in October when they announced the other major devices such as the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book.

The device, as of now is only meant for the developers, and interested devs can order it here

“Nothing illustrates key development strategies and best practices like being able to see and experience a comprehensive portfolio of actual holographic apps,” writes HoloLens developer Kudo Tsunoda in a Microsoft blog post. “It is with this in mind that we have provided for developers a free portfolio of holographic experiences for people to enjoy.”

Microsoft HoloLens is an Augmented Reality device, which is capable of projecting holographic images into the wearer’s field of view without blacking out the real world. There is a lot that can be done with the Hololens, but as of now, the project is in a very nascent stage.

While the price is a major concern right now, it is expected that with more devs working on it, the price of the device will ultimately be brought down as the company releases it for the public in the next few years.
