New Android Vulnerability, RAMpage, Discovered By Security Experts


Victor van der Veen (@vvdveen), an expert on smartphones security, published a new official report from international researchers who found an Android vulnerability known as RAMpage, which affects all recent Android phones, and could even modify some of the iOS devices.

This Thursday, the report was released by the international media, and it revealed that RAMpage could compromise passwords, messages, email apps, and photos, and documents.

However, there is no reason to panic for the time being, as there are no reports that malicious programs have already used this vulnerability.

RAMpage is a new version of an older Android vulnerability, the Rowhammer

In the warning, experts revealed that the RAMpage is a variation of another vulnerability called Rowhammer, which manipulates the existing data in the memory of the affected devices.

RAMpage exploits the vulnerabilities of the ION subsystem, the memory driver, which first appeared in the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, as Victor van der Veen reported.

Although it attacks Android system phones, the security experts are sure RAMpage could affect some iOS devices, too.

What RAMpage does is to compromise passwords, photos, email and app messages, and sensitive documents stored in the smartphone’s memory.

Google was demanded to work on a reliable solution to fix this vulnerability

The security researchers revealed this Android vulnerability in order to ask Google to work on a solution to remove this vulnerability before it affects the majority of Android users.

At the moment there is no security solution to tackle the problem but they expect it to arrive soon from Google and device protection specialists.

There are no reports that these attacks have occurred in a scenario beyond that of the demonstration test, so we are not facing a security breach that is causing havoc among users.
