Qualcomm has decided to change the name of its new Snapdragon 618 and 620 processors. What drove them to this decision?!

American manufacturer of chipset concluded that the names of the two processors have little impact on the public. Apparently 618 and 620 do not fully describe the power of the new processors and therefore Qualcomm decided to give them new names, the chipsets are now called Snapdragon 650 and 652.

The question remains – why? It’s not like they do not like the numbers 618 and 620, the new processors are basically just another category of performance compared to previous models such as 615, 616 and 617. The main improvements are made to the modem chip which now is able to support X8LTE CAT 6. Qualcomm has mentioned the new “advanced ARM -A72 CPU architecture and a new generation graphics processing unit, Qualcomm Adreno 510”.

Although this change seems childish to many of us, there is the possibility of a strategic move. Qualcomm probably consider launching a series of less performing processors and thus, the new chipsets will take names Snapdragon 618 and Snapdragon 620.

Qualcomm’s decision does not have a significant effect because devices build around these two chipsets were not launched yet, but it would be good to consider these changes in the future if you decide to take interest in these chipset models.
