Shadow Of The Tomb Rider Costs More Than $135 Million, So Its Success Is Mandatory, According To Eidos Montreal

Developing Shadow Of The Tomb Raider costs between $75 million and $100 million, to which must be added approximately $35 million for the promotion campaign. These figures come directly from David Anfossi of Eidos Montreal, who in an interview with Games Industry has questioned the current business model of single player AAA games.

“Shadow of the Tomb Raider and other single player AAA games [games produced and distributed by a mid-sized or major publisher] cost between $75 and $100 million. And that’s just production. The promotion is close to $35 million. So there’s definitely pressure,” said Anfossi referring to the fact that the success of the title is mandatory to cover the expenses.

That pressure, according to the studio manager responsible for the latest Thief and Deus Ex releases, makes them take fewer risks and study the potential audience thoroughly.

Anfossi mentions the business model of titles such as Ninja Theory’s Hellblade as an example of where the narrative video game industry can go.

The Canadian-based studio has expanded its team by 100 people with employees experienced in artificial intelligence and machine learning to “prepare for the new platforms.”

The more than 500 employees of the Canadian firm are working on three major projects at the moment, namely, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, The Avengers (collaborating with Crystal Dinamics, responsible for the previous adventures of Lara Croft) and a third yet unannounced game.

In early 2017, it was said that the latter title would be a new Guardians of the Galaxy.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider – Impressions

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider will be released on September 14th on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One after being in development since late 2015.

This development began along with Crystal Dinamics and was supported by Eidos Montreal, which now has the full control over the project.

We will see more information about Shadow of the Tomb Rider, as well as other big names like Kingdom Hearts III and Dragon Quest XI, at E3 2018, as Square Enix has announced that it will hold a significant press conference during the event.
