Just in time for the new Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie releasing this year, there is news about the good old classics. The Steam versions for the original Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 are being redesigned.
Even though Tomb Raider: Anniversary is already a thing on Steam, which is basically a remake of the very first Tomb Raider game, with a revamped story, retouched graphics etc. However, for all the nostalgic gamers among us who still prefer the classic, there is good news: Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 are getting remastered variants on Steam.
Modern graphics for old games
The original games are there on Steam as well, however they can only run through an emulator, which brings forth a bunch of issues regarding performance, resolution and controls. Thankfully, the remasters will have modern systems in mind, thus being able to run on beautiful graphics, at 1080p and 60fps.
Developer RealtechVR has taken care in the recent years of porting the old Tomb Raider games to mobile. For 2018, though, the resulting remastering work will also benefit the Steam versions. The classics will benefit of a new 3D engine, thus obtaining improved lighting and shadow effects, as well as advanced post-processing filters.
For those who might just want decent performance on modern systems: all graphics can be turned down! Additionally, the remasters get full controller support for modern gamepads, which is awesome!
According to RealtechVR: “The port is relying on Steam because we won’t provide game data. Since TR classic is on Steam, we will use the game data from there.” Basically the remasters will use the original games’ install packages, and that is why the remasters will only be available on Steam, too.
Free for the Owners of the Originals
It is a confirmed fact: Those who own the original Tomb Raider games on Steam will be gifted their respective Remastered editions, free of charge! And because the old Tomb Raider games are often sold at a discount on Valve’s platform for less than $2, players can get the remastered editions for a small price.
A set release date has not been announced yet by the developers, but they are saying at least that they have already finished porting the first two games and are currently working on the third installment. There will be news in the upcoming months.
