Uber has a partnership with NASA to develop a routing system for unmanned air traffic. (Unmanned Traffic Management-UTM)
Uber said it was the first company to enter into a partnership with NASA to build low-altitude shipping vessels. According to Reuters, the first four-seater ‘flying taxis’ could be tested in Los Angeles by 2020.
The new service called uberAIR is a much cheaper and safer alternative than helicopters.
The company plans to introduce, in 2023, on-duty intra-urban flying taxa and cooperates with aviation regulators in the US and Europe to obtain approvals.
“UberAir will make more flights a day than ever before”, said Jeff Holden, Uber Product Manager. The company will handle the “unmanned traffic management” program while the aircraft will be made by other contractors.
