The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is seeking to harness supporters’ computers in order to raise donations via cryptocurrency mining.

The organization launched The Hope Page which is a website that mines cryptocurrency with the help of visitors’ computer processing power.

The organization explained via a statement that the website will “allow Australians to provide help and hope to vulnerable children by simply opening the page while they are online”, ITnews Australia stated.

The Hope Page allows you to select the amount of processing power

According to the website, The Hope Page allows visitors to select how much processing power they want to contribute to the whole mining process.

“Give hope, just by being here. This website uses some of your computer’s processing power to automatically generate funds for UNICEF Australia. UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places to save children, protect their rights, and help them fulfill their potential,” the site says.

“Mining is perfectly safe for your computer. If you’re ever worried about power consumption, turn down the amount of processing power you’re donating.”

The longer they stay on the site, the more cryptocurrency will be mined.

“Mining is perfectly safe for your computer. If you’re ever worried about power consumption, turn down the amount of processing power you’re donating.” UNICEF stated.

The mined cryptocurrency will be transformed into fiat currency

The cryptocurrency that will be mined will then be transformed into fiat currency and donated to UNICEF Australia in order to be used for helping vulnerable children all over the world with various life-saving supplies such as drinking clean water, healthy food and vaccines.

The browser miner is powered by an opt-in version of the Coinhive API, AuthedMine, and it mines the monero cryptocurrency.

Jennifer Tierney, director of fundraising and communications for UNICEF Australia explains that the organization’s target is to use emerging technologies in order to raise awareness about current humanitarian crises and gather donation to support as many affected children as possible.

More than 1600 people have been already seen donating computer power in order to help the organization and its goal.
