With changing times in the world of technology, the level of security offered to the users has been changing too.
While many may consider security to be just another fancy option in a device, the truth is that Maslow’s pyramid has ‘security’ as its second most important feature after basic physiological needs.
In these changing times and changing security levels, hackers too have been taking quite a progressive approach and are no longer limited to viruses and Trojans.
The latest trend of the times is that of ‘ransomware’. One of the most infamous incidents of recent times, which brought the threat to light was that of the Hollywood Hospital.
Hackers had ‘hijacked’ the complete computer system of the Hollywood hospital, as they encrypted all the major files including patient records.
The hospital was forced to pay a fine of 40 Bitcoins (roughly $17000) in order to get their devices freed.
Apple has been a company which has been known for securing its offerings for its users. The users of Apple often take pride in the fact that they are using a super secure Operating System and it is almost impossible to breach it.
However, recent news has been rather alarming as Ransomware has now been detected in the Mac OS.
Researchers in Palo Alto observed a ransomware which came bundled with the popular BitTorrent application – Transmission. This ransomware has been named KeRanger by these researchers.
“After completing the encryption process, KeRanger demands that victims pay one bitcoin (about $400) to a specific address to retrieve their files,” the researchers wrote in their findings.
“Additionally, KeRanger appears to still be under active development and it seems the malware is also attempting to encrypt Time Machine backup files to prevent victims from recovering their back-up data.”
This ransomware has a very stealthy approach as it does nothing for the first three days and makes the users feel that everything is normal.
However, on the fourth day, it launches an executable file hidden inside the app, which connects with the main server and slowly starts encrypting files. The researchers were quick on letting Apple as well as Transmission know about this.
Transmission has now advised the users to quickly update to version 2.92 of their application.
The company has officially warned the users and has released a guide on what to do if such a thing happens with their device.
