In case you didn’t know about it until now, there is a ransomware attack that is quickly spreading throughout various countries in the world, such as the US, Russia, Spain, France or Ukraine. This happens only weeks after another ransomware attack wearing the name WannaCry.
What You Should Know
One of the most important things to know is the fact that various private companies confirmed being affected by the attack. On the list we can see Merck (an American pharma company), AP Moller-Maersk (a shipping company in Denmark), as well as WPP (a British advertising company). Saint-Gobain and BNP Paribas from France also reported being hit, together with the Russian companies Rosneft and Evraz.
What Happens Exactly?
We had the chance to see various photos or videos of the affected computers. There is a red message appearing on a black screen, saying that the important files on the computer have been encrypted. If the user sees this text, the files cannot be accessed and, according to the message, it’s a waste of time to try to recover them.
According to a statistic issued by Kaspersky Lab, there are around 2,000 computers that have been affected by this ransomware. Microsoft declared that the origin of the attack is in Ukraine, where the first target was M.E.Doc, which is a tax-accounting software firm. The ransomware quickly spread to a minimum of 64 countries all over the world.
We don’t know who is behind the ransomware attack yet. There has been a Bitcoin address found, where the cyber criminals ask people to send money if they want to get their data back. Moreover, nobody can predict how bigger the attack will get. Some reports have shown Asia is affected too, but it remains to be seen which countries will have to fight it.
