Even though OnePlus, Huawei and Samsung are already introducing 5G support to their flagship smartphones, Apple is not going to give its iPhones 5G in 2019. The Cupertino based tech giant is planning to release a special 5G iPhone in 2020 and from the looks of it, this might not actually happen.

The folks at Fastcompany are reporting that an insider source who knows the deal between Apple and Intel is saying that Intel will not be able to provide Apple with the 5G modem chips that it needs in order to create a 5G iPhone in 2020.

2020 5G iPhone

“The chip giant was to be the sole provider of the 5G modems in the 2020 iPhones, too, but it has been missing deadlines for the development of the chip, the XMM 8160 5G modem, a source with knowledge of the situation says,” said the source of Fastcompany.

The fact that LG is missing deadlines means two things for Apple. The Cupertino based tech giant needs to choose between taking the risk of not launching a 5G iPhone in 2020 or to find another hardware manufacturer.

Tense Relation

Apple is infamous for being a demanding client and all its partner hardware manufacturers have complained about this. Therefore, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the insider source is claiming that the relation between Apple and Intel is tense.

The only reason why Apple has yet to move back to Qualcomm is due to the legal issues that Apple and Qualcomm have had in the past. For those who are unaware, Qualcomm sued Apple for patent infringing and Apple had to pay up.

Conclusion

Neither Apple nor LG want to release a statement regarding the 5G chip modem manufacturing issue. However, we believe that Apple is not going to launch the highly anticipated 5G iPhone in 2020. This is bad news for Apple since all other tech manufacturers are introducing this technology and Apple is surely going to lose some fans over this.
