We have some bad news for old Google fans who purchased Nexus smartphones. Today the Android parent has started rolling out the last OTA (over the air) update to Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. This update changes the build number of the two smartphones to “OPM7.181105.004”. Unfortunately, this OTA update marks the end of the Nexus era when Google used to team up with third-party tech manufacturers such as LG and Motorola in order to create powerful Android smartphones.

Nexus 5X and 6P Last OTA Update

Google offers a three-year update plan to every Android-powered smartphone and sadly, today is the end of the plan offered for Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Google received lots of criticism from its fans a couple of years ago when it decided to leave the Nexus brand behind in favor of the new Pixel smartphones.

We should also mention that this last update introduces a bunch of security patches that all Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P owners should make sure to download because it will improve the overall software security of their smartphones.

The Good News

On the bright side of things, we have to admit that the new Pixel smartphones are getting better every year. People questioned Google’s decision to move away from the Nexus brand and to follow its own path in the smartphone industry, but from the looks of it, this was the right decision to make.

ROM Alternatives

Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P owners should be pleased to know that they can always get future Android updates on their own. There are many developer teams who create ROMs based on Google’s latest updates and the ROMs can be manually installed on Android-powered devices such as Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Therefore, the two smartphones can still keep on functioning for years to come.
